A journey with ultra-cold atoms

Ultracold atoms constitute a versatile platform to experimentally investigate diverse fields of physics: light-matter interaction, metrology, condensed matter, or even cosmology. In such platforms, atomic samples are cooled and brought to quantum degeneracy thanks to light, and it is also light that enables physicists to control their external and internal degrees of freedom.

In this talk I will introduce one of these experiments, which traps a Bose-Einstein condensate in two dimensions, and I will present the study we conducted with it on dynamical symmetries.

I will also detail the material support that such experiments require and the current research practices to open a discussion about the sustainability of our field regarding the several planetary limits that have been exceeded.
