The effect of meniscus dynamics on sloshing waves
Abstract:
The problem of liquid sloshing, i.e., the oscillations of a free liquid surface in partially filled containers, pertains to many aspects of daily life, ranging from mundane wine tasting to more pragmatic issues such as liquid spilling and transport safety. Therefore, a proper predictive understanding and modeling of the sloshing hydrodynamics at stake is essential in the design process of liquid tanks.
In this talk, based on the PhD work of F. Viola and A. Bongarzone, I will first discuss the influence of contact line friction in the decay of sloshing waves at the surface of liquid enclosed in an open container. I will compare a weakly nonlinear model to a piecewise linear projection method, developed for simple geometries. I will extend these models to describe the relaxation dynamics of a liquid column oscillating back and forth in a u-tube, providing comparisons with experiments conducted in collaboration with B. Dollet and E. Lorenceau.
