The Return of Quantum Chaos: Ergodicity, Thermalisation and Localisation

Seminars of the Institut de Physique de Nice,

Abstract:

Chaos is a familiar route from deterministic dynamics to statistical behavior. But what happens to chaos when a system is quantized? And what becomes of it in the many-body quantum world?

I will give a pedagogical introduction to classical and quantum chaos, from integrability and ergodicity to the universal signatures of quantum chaos. I will then discuss the renewed interest in many-body quantum chaos, where chaos is closely connected to thermalisation and competes with integrability and localisation.

I will illustrate these ideas with recent results on interacting quantum gases, where interactions can induce localisation transitions and quantum diffraction can generate chaos in systems close to integrability.
