Improvement of signal to noise ratio, laboratory and on-sky testing of new detectors for intensity interferometry (Sarah Tolila)

Abstract:
Interferometry in astronomy enables extremely high angular resolution by combining light from multiple telescopes. While amplitude interferometry measures both phase and amplitude, it requires strict optical stability. In contrast, intensity interferometry relies on correlations of intensity fluctuations and is more robust to atmospheric and optical imperfections. Although widely used in the mid-20th century, it was abandoned due to lower sensitivity. Recent advances in photonics, detectors, and electronics have revived interest in this technique. The IC4Stars project has made significant progress, including detector characterization and on-sky experiments at Calern. Early results are promising, and a three-telescope campaign targeting Gamma Peg is planned.
