Abstract:
Interactions between elastic and fluid stresses occur in a wide range of physical processes, often leading to complex and intriguing behaviors. In this seminar, we explore two such scenarios in thin-film flows, with applications in wetting, friction, and adhesion.
In the first part, we focus on the role of viscoelastic normal stresses in lubrication flows. We will discuss how these stresses modify friction forces, both in the context of contact-line motion [1,2] and during the sliding of immersed cylinders and spheres on planar surfaces [3]. In the second part, we investigate (elasto)hydrodynamic interactions between elastic bodies, specifically in the cases of bouncing spheres [4] and viscous adhesion [5]. We demonstrate that the lubrication film exhibits non-trivial self-similar dynamics, which significantly impact friction and adhesion in these systems.
