Notre-Dame de Paris, From the fire to the restored monument, a cathedral of research

Seminars of the Institut de Physique de Nice,

Abstract:

The cathedral has now been restored to its former glory, and the renewed whiteness of the stone illuminates the interior of the monument.Nevertheless, the fire that occurred at Notre-Dame de Paris on 15 April 2019 has left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness. Shortly after the fire, scientific teams mobilised to collect, safeguard and investigate the remains of the injured monument.  The research focused on the materiality and intangibles of the cathedral. In this lecture, we will present this scientific and human adventure, which currently brings together over 150 scientists from a wide variety of fields. We will detail the research challenges, the importance of the collected remains, and the constraints specific to this type of research.A number of results were obtained, and the focus will be directed towards the provenance of materials and supply routes in the Middle Ages, the chronology of the monument, and the iron elements that contributed to the cathedral's structure. Finally, we will show how wood can shed light on climatic changes in the Middle Ages.
