Optical control of light transport in a cold ytterbium atomic cloud

Abstract:

This PhD work explores the interaction of light within an optically dense, cold atomic ensemble of ytterbium atoms. It focuses on two main aspects: the control of atomic states by engineered optical fields and the transport of light in strongly scattering media. We demonstrated a new experimental method to directly launch an in-situ optical excitation with a desired frequency in the deep core of our optically thick cloud. We further introduced a method to follow the propagation of the launched excitation spatially and temporally by monitoring the internal state population.
